Roman Polshvedkin, Senior Deputy Minister of Industry, Natural Resources, Energy and Transport of the Republic of Komi, stated this at the International Forum “Big City Ecology” held on April 5-7, 2017 in Saint Petersburg. The Forum was dedicated to introducing innovative conservation equipment and technologies in Russia, which contribute to conservation of natural resources, strengthening environmental safety and improving living standards of the population in big cities. Roman Polshvedkin made a report on the issues related to PA regulations.

Komi environmental authorities have initiated amendments to protected areas legislation.

The establishment of a new protected area (PA) in the Inta region has been unanimously approved in the course of public consultations. The project was developed on the basis of the materials of the integrated area survey conducted by the Institute of Biology, Komi Science Centre, Ural Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Chernorechensky reserve is part of the draft KR PA development concept up to 2030. It is based on the principle of taking account of the local community’s interests, when regimes and boundaries of the reserves make it possible to apply traditional forms of nature management such as mushroom picking, berrying, recreational hunting and fishing, and fishing for sport.

On the initiative of the UNDP/GEF/EU project “Strengthening Protected Area System of the Komi Republic to Conserve Virgin Forest Biodiversity in the Pechora River Headwaters Region”, the academic and research workshop “Climate and permafrost in the European Northeast in the past, today and in the future” was held on 27 April 2017 at the Institute of Natural Sciences, Pitirim Sorokin Syktyvkar State University. Students and lecturers from the departments of biology and ecology participated in the workshop. Alexander Novakovsky, staff member of the Institute of Biology, Komi Science Center, RAS, Ph.D. of Biological Sciences, made a report on climate models and their use for weather and climate forecasting. Dmitry Kaverin, staff member of the Institute of Biology, Ph.D. of Geographical Sciences, made a report on climatic changes and their influence on landscapes in the north of Russia. A practical guide for schoolchildren and students on climate change information for efficient adaptation developed by a group of authors headed by Nina Shergina, Ph.D. of Biological Sciences, lecturer of the Department of Biology, was presented at the workshop. Svetlana Zagirova, UNDP/GEF/EU Project Monitoring Expert, presented the results of testing, which had been conducted among students before the workshop in order to evaluate their level of knowledge in the field of climatic issues. The workshop organizers and participants made a conclusion of the students’ insufficient awareness in the field of climate change issues and climate change adaptation in the region.
